You'd think abortion was the linchpin of the Republic, for all the venom Liberal's spit about it. But it is funny, this 'holy of holy' of rights, dare I say this Liberal 'sacriment', isn't even a right spelled out in the most important document of our country. why?

And none of this 'penumbra' of rights stuff either.

I know of no liberal who has ever said that abortion is the most important right.

Whoever told you this was lying to you and should not be trusted to speak truth or sense.

What is in the Constitution is the idea that people have the right to make their own life decisions for themselves, rather than the government making their decisions for them.

Thus, the liberty clause in the list of purposes (Preamble) addresses this, as well as the 9th Amendment, which says that, just because a right isn't specifically listed, doesn't mean it's not a right.

The government needs to make a compelling case that something ISN'T a right before it can curtail a behavior. (Citing religious believe that a single cell is fully human is NOT adequate to this, as not everyone shares that belief.)

Deciding for oneself whether and when to reproduce is a basic human right.

It's not the only, or even the biggest, but it's pretty important.

If you were genuinely interested in there not being abortions, you would support policies that prevent unwanted pregnancy, such as education, and availability of birth control.

Ironically, it's usually those who say they don't want any more abortions who oppose those things that would go furthest toward making abortion rare.

The US Constitution is not written to empower government but to limit government. In that respect there is no protection or prohibition regarding abortion which was a concept the founders could not even fathom at the time. In keeping with the tradition and spirit of the US Constitution as a lmiting docterine they determined that any law banning abortion would be a violation of the US Constitution by prohibiting a course of action that is not covered by the constitution. Now this is not the end all be all to the greater argument of abortion. The Prolife groups have the recourse to add an amendment to the US Constitution banning abortion, but the reality is that neither Prolife nor Prochoice groups have a majority and we are essentially a nation divided, and if we resort to dividing our selves into groups we will stop listening to one another and that scenario leads to fustration and eventually violence.

The constitution gives people rights. Doesn't take them away. Laws take away people's rights. If you want to make a restriction, you must make a law. That's why this country is less free with every law made and passed. Something that is not stated as a right, nor made to be a law is what gives us freedom of choice. There should be more of these freedoms in this country rather then restrictions from being free. Freedom of choice allows for people's mentality to change with time, so that is why this is a huge debate now and not 300 years ago. Our minds, values, and behaviors have changed and we are confused on what our identity is. Passing a law on this is not an answer though, it's just one more bar in the cage. With time, this question will work itself out, once our minds become mature enough to handle this reality.

Whether you're "pro choice" or "pro life" the facts speak for themsevles..........In the early 90s violent crimes were on the rise. So much in fact that government experts predicted as much as a 100% increase in violent crime by the end of the 90s. Then something amazing happened. Violent crime actually dropped. And it dropped by a LOT. The CLinton adminstration naturally took credit for it, insisting that their economic measures were to thank. The reality however was the ruling of Roe -vs- Wade! All of the poor, alcoholic, drug using women in the late 70s and early 80s began having abortions instead of giving birth to kids that would have been the 20 year old criminals of the 90s! Seems that when the abortion rate goes up, crime 20 years later drops. And when the abortion rate goes down, crime 20 years later is on the rise.

Liberals don't see abortion as "the most important right" Abortionis a neo-con hangup-up. A lot of people--including a lot of liberals--don't approve of abortion. But they recognize that is a personal (religious) belief--and its only the extreme right that wants to ram their religious beliefs down everyone else's throats.

I'm a liberal and I could not care less about abortion. Its none of my business. If you want to crawl into a strange woman uterus and tell her what to do, good luck.
After what the cons have done to that important piece of paper you mention, I think you have no right to talk.

The prohibition of abortions is definitely not in the Constitution either and the Right seem to get their panties in a wad as much as the Left.

What is not illegal is legal. What is legal is moral.

Junto A, do you really think what is legal is moral? That is about the stupidest thing that I've ever heard.

By your logic, slavery was moral in the 1800's (up until the ratification of the 13th amendment) because it was legal.
