The German crossing of the Meuse and the defeat of the French forces at Sedan (1940) is a perfect example of how precise timing can affect the outcome of a battle. French military planners believed that the Wehrmacht would have to wait for at least 6 days upon reaching the East bank of the Meuse to accumulate sufficient artillery support to force the crossing. However, as the Germans had developed self-contained armoured divisions and an effective tactical close air support doctrine, their Panzer division spearhead did not have to wait for the slower horse-drawn artillery to arrive. Thus, the Germans were able to force a crossing almost immediately, therefore denying the French the ability to sufficiently re-enforce the line and prevent a German breakthrough. This rapid crossing of the Meuse and the ability to resume mobile warfare enabled the Germans to split the British and French armies and drive on to the channel. Therefore, the Wehrmacht was able to circumvent a parity in force that would, in traditional military terms where the attack requires at least three to one superiority in mass, have otherwise doomed the German invasion of France to failure. In terms of "placement", Manstein's plan of attacking through the Ardennes forest, a historical barrier to invading forces and deemed impassable to tanks and armoured vehicles, meant that the Wehrmacht was able to achieve strategic surprise and hit the French where they least expected it.
