I really want to move out of Pennsylvania but for the past six months I can barely get a phone interview in other states. When I follow up I keep getting told they prefer to hire locally, within their state etc... I don't want to quit and move with no job in sight - assistant/associate/registrar's at colleges aren't easy to find. Ideas??

I have been hired out of state 2x in my career. The first time I was in PA and got hired in Charlotte, NC. The second time I was in Charlotte and was hired in Minneapolis, MN.

The first time I responded to an ad in the Charlotte newspaper. The second time I found the job posted at either monster.com or hotjobs.com. So I can tell you that both do work.

These days, most companies do hire locally. Why? Because if there is a match locally, it is a heck of a lot cheaper to NOT move someone from point A to point B (or have to wait for them to move...and if not waiting, then put them up in a hotel and give them time off later). So I think this is working against you. I would also say that if you are in a field where you are very specialized, there is more of a chance than not (i.e. they can't find anyone locally). If you are one of many with the same, similiar resume out there, again, your chances are lower.

Best of luck.

Post your resume on line. Search and post on www.hotjobs.com or www.monster.com. Another thing you could do is search online newspapers for job listings. All in all more people see your posting online.

Good luck to you!
