This completely depends on the application of the laptop. If I am going to be traveling on the road and attending conventions and seminars in which I need to take notes I will use my small travel laptop. If I am going to be on the road for a long period of time and want to be able to watch some movies and play games I will bring my large (17" screen) laptop.
Larger laptops are cheaper and they also can have much better components in them. Since it is nearly impossible to upgrade most laptops, you will be stuck with whatever you buy for a long time. If you get a compact laptop, you will not be able to do much more than web browsing, email, and word processing type applications. Larger laptops are heavier but also have higher end components which will allow for you to do more intense applications such as games.

I even have owned some pc computers, IBM, Dell, and Toshiba laptops. Out of all 3 of those I even have favorite the Toshiba. those are some very rugged little laptops that are very much less costly to repair. And Toshiba's customer provider is amazingly, very knowledgeable! might I propose once you're finding into getting a sparkling pc, determine that's a homestead windows vista like minded, and is derived with a assured improve form homestead windows XP professional to homestead windows vista, while this working device is accessible.

If you are asking about brand, I always recommend Toshiba - they only make laptops and they make really good ones. I have owned three and have had very good results from them. I even sold one of them used for the same amount I paid for it two years ago - they hold their value.
Size is of course depends on personal preference and how often you are going to carry it. I prefer the 15.4" widescreen, but these are heavy. The newer 14" widescreens are much lighter and have come down in price in the last year.

Considering that I carry mine to class, I prefer smaller ones. I have one that's 15.4 inches, and it's really too big for its current use, resulting in some back problems for me.
It depends on what you want it for. Smaller and lighter notebooks are generally less powerful. Larger notebooks have more features often times, but are incredibly bulky and awkward for carrying around with you.
