I though the battery/ cell phone had something that made the charging stop when the barrty gets full while it is plugged in.

not all batteries are protected. you can easily find out by touching the charger. if it cools down after the charging is complete it means that the batteries, or phone have protection.

Most newer systems have overcharge protection. Older systems did not and were subject to overcharging the battery. Overcharging usually shortens the life of the battery.
