yes, it is wrong. it is the root of much suffering for it distracts us from pursuing ultimate happiness. it is shallow and mindless. rich people often have emotional problems, stress, and sad children (unless being rich went along with the pursuit of their happiness: doctor helping people)
technology is in a way materialistic, and too many people spend too much time and money on it as a form of relaxation, avoiding thinking, communicating,self-improvement, soul searching, and learning. (tv in itself is not bad, but today we as a nation have begun to spend the whole evenings in separate rooms from others to watch the mindless garbage we choose.)
instead of caring about others, we care more about ourselves. it is more important to have better clothes, cars, homes, and vacations than to seek the rewards of helping even those in our own families who are struggling. (leaving us to know when we have trouble there is worry for no one will help us.)
i could go on more, but in short materialism has greatly hurt us as individuals, and as a nation. it is a false marker of success.

No. It is intensely problematic to seek materialism as the end or purpose of one's existence or to seek ultimate or absolute security in materialism (this is always an illusion since all of material reality is finite and contingent). However, the material world is not inherently evil, it is our desires that corrupt material reality. Deal with your desires, and the goodness, truth, and beauty of the material world become ever more impressive and apparent.

Not wrong at all ... the problem is when ALL of your security is in material things, because they don't last. Only YOU last, and the number one material asset that you have is your own mind, body and personality. When that is in good shape then all of you is in good shape, even if money and 'things' go ... without you, all of the money and 'things' are all pretty useless ....
So sure, seek some material things, but remember, the most important thing that you possess is you, your body, mind, talents and personality

No, in fact material security is what allows most people the means to protest capitalist materialism. Imposing guilt on success. Resenting daddy for having enough money to send them to collage. Most of those against materialism being spoiled, already having, and resentful of the system that made it possible.

No, I believe the root is not the seeking of security...but...the imbalance materialism has become. Like all major problems. Want only becomes greed when an imbalance has occurred.

not really
i happen to engage in shopping therapy at least once in a while
security in materialism isn't bad
it's placing materialism over people that's bad
buying stuff isn't bad
buying stuff with money that's used fo feed your family is bad.
it's all a matter of how you are materialistic and what you use to feed that vice.

Wrong? No, but it doesn't work very well in making one happy! Financial security is a necessary part of life and having it solves life's most basic problem,- survival. But there are many orher issues that must be dealt with like relating to others, self-esteem, achieving a sense of fulfillment etc.

no longer something. Wealth, charm and means are presents for use for the greater effective glory of God and bringing humanity closer to God as a set and as persons. A rich society with entertainment has greater time to replicate on God and the substantial questions of existence than a subsistence subculture the place the only alleviation from artwork is getting inebriated as quickly as a month whilst artwork is suspended for some reason by the bosses. of course, they are in a position for use to chop up human beings from God, it rather is morally incorrect. yadda yadda yadda
