Periapsis or pericentre are the most general terms used to convey that the star being orbited is not the Sun. Perihelion to convey that it is the sun being orbited

Several astronomical terms exist (apogee & perigee, aphelion & perihelion, generic equivalents based on apsis, and related but rarer terms). In architecture, apsis is a synonym for apse. There also exists a video game publishing and developing company named Apogee Software.

A diagram of Keplerian orbital elements. In astronomy, an apsis, plural apsides is the point of greatest or least distance of the elliptical orbit of an astronomical object from its center of attraction, which is generally the center of mass of the system.

The point of closest approach is called the periapsis or pericentre and the point of farthest excursion is called the apoapsis (Greek από, from, which becomes απ before a vowel, and αφ before rough breathing), apocentre or apapsis (the latter term, although etymologically more correct, is much less used).

A straight line drawn through the periapsis and apoapsis is the line of apsides. This is the major axis of the ellipse, the line through the longest part of the ellipse.

Related terms are used to identify the body being orbited. The most common are perigee and apogee, referring to orbits around the Earth, and perihelion and aphelion, referring to orbits around the Sun (Greek ‘ήλιος hēlios sun).

Perihelion. Helion for the sun and peri as in proximity. Just think of the p. The opposite point is aphelion. Think of away. A and P. Away and Proximity. Aphelion and Perihelion.

Works for satellites orbiting earth too only earth is Geos as in geology. So what could the point, at which a satellite is closest to the earth in its orbit, be called?

Perihelion. Assuming it is orbiting the sun.

Side note: If a planet were named 'Lous', would the closest point in an orbit around it be perilous?

perihelion (r1) if we have the eccentericity (e) of the orbit we can write : r1=a(1-e) and the maximum distance is aphelion (r2) which is : r2=a(1+e)
