Well, he certainly learned that fires ruin houses and also that it's not a good idea to hang out at the local bar and accept drinks while using bad words to the women. He was learning about life, but also learning that he was going to have to take care of himself because his mother could not and his grandmother wasn't exactly stable and flexible in her beliefs.
