I found my last job by NETWORKING....i.e. meeting people that I didn't know in the fields and companies I wanted to work at!
The problem with the Internet and newspapers is that you are posting along with 100s of other people. Another problem is that you are being reactive, by applying to those jobs that are listed rather than those jobs you really want. I've seen statistics that state that less than 10% of jobs come from these methods.
Friends can be a good source of leads, but I have found that you need to tell people precisely how they can help you. "Friend, I am interested in companies A, B, C and D or working as a financial analyst, do you know anyone that I could talk to that could give me more insight into these companies or this sort of job?" The problem is that your circle of friends may have few contacts in your chosen field.
Here's what I did to find my last job. I met a couple of people in the industry I wanted to work in. I learned as much as I could about that industry from them and who the key players were. From there, I met a few other people in the fields. After a while, I got to understand what the issues and challenges were facing the industry. I prepared a presentation on the industry, sent it to the department heads of the other 8 competitors and followed up with telephone calls. One of the companies actually called me for an interview and made an offer within a week.
Coming out of college, I sent a paper I had written on a banking topic to the department heads at several banks and also followed up with a telephone call. This resulted in several interviews and four job offers.
The bottom line is to decide what you want to do, the companies where you want to work (do internet research) and the hiring managers/department heads at those companies. Then make contacts! Ask them to sit down with you to talk about their industry, company, challenges and jobs.
Don't ignore the other ways of finding jobs, because others have found jobs this way, but be proactive and search out the jobs that aren't advertised!!!!!!!!!!! Good luck!

I work for myself now. Kind of a choice I made when I was fed up working for the "man"
I had found that job (nurse/teacher) in an ad in the local newspaper we get once a week.
I think most of my jobs have been that way or an idea I had on my own (to start my own business).
Or friends - word of mouth of things opening up.
