1. 15/50 = 3/10
In order for 15 to become 3, it needs to be divided by 5. So you do the same thing to the denominator (50/5= 10)
2. When you plus or minus something from a number, the number does change. (E.g. 2+1= 3) So 1/4 added to 2/2 will give a different value from 1/4.
However when a number is multiply or divided by value of 1, it stays the same. 1 can be equal to 2/2, 3/3, 4/4, 0.1/0.1, and so on.
So example: 1/4 * 2/2= 2/8 and therefore the value of a fraction only stays the same if you multiply or divide the same for numerator and denominator but not adding or subtracting from them. (I'm explaining to you as well as Margret since you can't do the first question.)

Okay. The answer to #1 is 15/50=3/10. You have to multiply 15 by x and 50 by 3, so you get 150=15x. 150/15=10, so x=10.
In number two, 'Margaret' went the wrong way about what she was trying to do. Essentially she's correct, but you have to MULTIPLY the numerator and denominator by the same thing and not add. So:
1/4 x 2/2 = 2/8
So 2/8 = 1/4.
Also, to add fractions together you have to get the same bottom number, so to add 1/4 to 2/2 you'd have to multiply 2/2 by 2/2 to get 4/4 and add it to 1/4:
1/4 + 2/2 (x 2/2)
1/4 + 4/4
5/4 = 1 1/4.
So you could simply explain to Margaret that where she added 1/4 + 2/2, she should have multiplied, and she would have gotten the correct answer.
