How absorbent can 'absorbent coasters' be if they have a painted design on them?

I had a set of absorbent stone coasters that worked fantastic, but the design was molded into the face, and there was no paint. I would like a new set, and have found many with interesting designs, but I have doubts as to the absorbency of a coaster with a layer of paint on it. Wouldn't the moisture pool up on the paint?

Paint would not be good for absorption. They may have used a dye or stain that allows moisture to saturate through them.
