Yes I have ..People are very friendly the country is old world..I felt much safer in Russia than I do in England. Most people live normal lives.just as they do here..but they would give you their last food if you were their guest..The law is very unjust out there and certain people take advantage of that..Police are of no use and would only concern themselves with big crimes like murder..police can be bribed if you find yourself in trouble..It is only the politics and the politicians that are corrupt ..the main people are honest.

Although we tend to think of Russia as a bitterly cold place, I was in Moscow in summer and the weather was nearly tropical. It was probably around 80 degrees and everything was really green. I also got to see the whole midnight sun thing when it doesn't actually get dark until about 1am and only for an hour or so, so I had a street artist draw my portrait by sunlight at midnight on Arbat Street. People weren't particularly friendly, things were expensive, and the quality of the food was hit-and-miss. The museums were great.

I spent some time in St Peterburg (a.k.a. Leningrad during the Soviet Union times). A lovely and fascinating city.
They have a lovely waterfront with frequent tours (generally given only in Russian, though) of the historic facades. There is also a substantial amount of statuary and monuments throught the city. The subway is the converse - strangely (and pleasantly) modern among so many pieces of the past. Clocks above the doors time arrivals down to the second.
And the Hermitage! If I were to compare it to anything it would be the Louvre. Like the Louvre, it used to be the residence of royalty (the 'Winter Palace' building, specifically) and now it is absolutely dense with art. The kind of works that you only usually see in books. A person could spend weeks here and never regret it.
I also number among the most beautiful things I have ever seen to be the Russian ballet. Even the memory brings tears to my eyes. Just fantastic.
If you go, can I go back with you? ( :

No, but from what I did learn, it's still trying to recover from the fall of the Soviet Union. It has many of the same problems all people, even the US, faced while trying to find a system that could support them. It has corruption (like America and the rest of the world), the bad areas to live, a few good areas to live, poverty...
What I think it needs the most is some help, if anyone could give it. At least, that's how it was a year or two ago. I haven't checked on it in a while...

Yes. I've been to Moscow & St. Petersburg.
In general, I found it run-down (outside of the tourist spots), xenophobic, highly bureaucratic, and much more expensive than it should be for an essentially third-world country. There is a large class divide, with some people very wealthy and big into conspicuous consumption (so lots of high-end strores) with most people scraping to get by.
Still, it's an intresting place. If you go, get off the beaten path and see real people and real things, not just some tour group trip.
You will need to be able to read Cyrillic (the Russian alphabet) and know some very basic Russian if you're on your own, as many things aren't in any other language and many people (esp. over 35) don't speak anything but Russian.
