As was already mentioned, men performed without clothing.
If women did the same it would be distracting. It would have given a whole new meaning for the pole vault event.
Besides, it was the woman's job to stay home and make baklava, mousaka and pastitsio for her husband athlete
when he returned.

Women had lower social status than they do today. They were not officially part of the public sphere, and were basically forced to stay at home. They did not participate in politics, voting, business, or pretty much anything. All this extended to the Olympic games as well. Essentially, they were not thought to be important or good enough for such activities. It was a patriarchal society.

Atalante was the only female in ancient Greece that participated in Olympics, mentioned very rarely.
