You always hear Christian conservatives or people who are anti-gay threaten that if gay people got the same civil rights and are allowed civil partnership and raise families that it will destroy the American family, religious values and society etc.
Of course the downfall must start somewhere on a small scale. I have two gay men living in my neighbourhood, they have kids who go to school with mine. So far, I do not see exactly HOW this has brought any detrimental effect on MY kids, on MY neighbourhood on MY family or on MY faith in God. When my child asks about his friend's family I simply say, " Daryl has two fathers becase some people fall in love with the same gender and decide to raise a family. It is very different and not everyone likes it but you must always treat Daryl AND his parents with respect." So far.... no problem.

So how exactly is this disaster going to happen?

I am a lesbian growing in a conservative asian community. As far as i know, these are the reasons put across to me. Basically, certain religions believe that one of MAN's obligations in life is to procreate. Another passage to heaven if you will. I don't say i agree but i do understand their point of you. But i simply ask them , does these mean that hetero couple that can't have children for medical reasons or do not wish to have children suffer the same 'penalty'? And does it mean that people who live a single life for one reason or another are considered a sinner? In the end, it's educating and accepting that people have choice; that love does not pick and choose. I think that at the end of the day, whether in hetero or homo family, the basic rules of humanity are impt. Love, Trust, Respect and Commitment.

the same type of people were saying the exact same things about other ethnicities not that far back in the past.

They were wrong then, they're wrong now.
