Believe it or not, there actually is a town that Mayberry was modeled after. It was Andy Griffith's home town. It's most famous residents were the " Original Siamese Twins" I am sorry I can't recall their names but this town and the twins and all their relatives were featured in National Geographic some time in the last year or so.
In the TV series there are many place names they use that are very similar to real cities such as Mount Pilot( Mount Pilier)
