how big? if it doesnt have to be huge start with a toilet paper tube for the body, then make four tubes smaller for the legs by cutting another toilet paper tube in half longwise and deciding how long they have to be then forming tubes from the half tube and taping it up with masking tape, then make a wad of paper for the base of the head and wrap that with tape and tape to one end of the body, then begin covering these taped together pieces with the wet newspaper and glue strips, take a section of wet gluey paper and roll it into a snake for a tail and attatch that to the wet back end of the cat when you are almost finished and pinch up a couple of ears on the head, then let it dry, paint it with acrylic craft paints when done, with a dull yellow tan body with black spots. there ya go. they dont expect it to be any work of true art im sure.

If you have like a ceramic or plastic shaped like a wild cat (I know my brother used to have a toy like this) you could paper mache around it so that it has some definite form, then when its dry, cut a slit in it to get the shape out and paper mache over the slit, then paint it like a cheeta
If you dont have a toy, try folding cardboard or some sort of flexable thing for a base, like you could use toilet paper holders for the legs, a ball for the head, etc. and do the same that way.
Basically, you need to start with a form before you do the paper mache, it'll make it a lot easier.

I would first get a good photograph of the animal, and make a simple drawing of its general shape...details will come later.
You will need something to hold the shape of the item.(.for instance,,,to make something round of paper mache, you could use a baloon).you could use lightweight chicken wire to make the general form of the Cheetah.
Then you tear newspaper into long strips, and mix flour and water into a paste..(like a watery cake batter).
You dip the newspaper into the mixture and lay it over the shape you have formed with the wire.
Let it dry (this is a messy art)
Once the whole thing is dry, you can add detail by using paint, beads..whatever. Believe it or not, they usually look pretty good when finished..
Have fun! It's a fun project!

Get some iron hangers from your closet, and open them. Make the shape of a cat. The make the mache and put it on. You will need at lot of newspapers!
PS: mache is:
water and white flour, mixed together. Put that on (inside and outside) the paper (paper should be wet).
Also you can use tapestry glue in powder which you mix with water. Here you also put the paper inside with the mix, and then you just make the sculpture.

Tear newspaper into 1/2 to 1" strips, mix some flour and water, create a frame from clotheshanger wire, fill it out with dry paper, then cover with several layers of paper mache'. Let it dry and paint. It should be a fun project for her. Let her do at least some of it! lol.

use chicken wire to form the cheetah and then tape around it with masking tape to make sure the form of the cheetah is correct and then paper mache over it and paint it. :)

Do you know how to do paper maché? If you do, then I would reccomend making a simple "skeletal" frame first, so you will have something to maché onto. Do it in layers, and after it dries, paint it with poster paint.
