Whilst I admit that they may be dangerous people and that their crimes are abhorrent, and I am making no effort to defend them, why do the authorities feel it neccesary to provide the public with only their details?

Why not, for example, the arsonists, who are more capable of inflicting heavy casualties upon the populace?

I am by no means an expert on the subject so apologies if I have got details wrong- I am only wondering what people's view on this is and do not mean to cause offence, so I would like none in return- thanks!

They're not being given details of offenders - just how many are in a particular area. The idea is that if you're considering whether your kids would be safe walking to school on their own or playing in the street unsupervised you'd have some idea of how many child sex offenders are in the neighbourhood so you can judge what sort of risk you're taking.

It's all total rubbish of course - even sex offenders can drive or ride a bicycle and there must be at least one offender within a day's driving of everyone in the country.

Even publishing their full details won't make much difference if they're just going to take kids off the street. There are examples of them kidnapping kids from their own beds and no amount of publicity about them will stop that. Publishing their details will be of benefit if you want to be happy that the "nice guy down the street" really is a decent chap that your kids could go to in an emergency or you could leave them with for half an hour. But every pedo starts sometime... and there are plenty that have never been caught or convicted...

The only 100% safe approach with child sex offenders is to lock them away and throw away the key

We have not yet decided to do so but I think it is a bad idea. First it is a compulsion which can be very hard to resist but some offenders will take counselling and resist it but by publishing their details they can never be free of it. Some of them will simply will change their identity and disappear and that happens now with the sex offenders list. There will be an even greater risk if you publish their details. Also what about mistakes. We have a case in our town where the sun published the address of a sex offender but put the wrong picture with the article. The guy who's picture was published was quite innocent and the paper published an apology the next day (Personally I think the Sun should publish an apology every day for just being there) but the guy still had to move house. I do have some experience in this area and I wonder when you get some people who say their lives have been ruined by being sexually abused as children how much they have suffered from the actual abuse and how much they have suffered from people telling them it as ruined their lives.

The truth of the matter is if the British justice system served the honest law-abiding citizens the way it should there would be no need for the public to have that information because dangerous criminals would not be let back out into society, especially not to the care of the incompetent social care and parole systems.

We need to know exactly where these perverts are so as we can protect our children but I agree we also need to be aware of other criminals
