Feels like it seperated at the sternum. Is that even possible???
I knew that being overweight was bad, but this is ridiculous! Am I in danger? Or will this heal fairly soon?

coughing isn't going to tear anything "loose". However, you can certainly strain intercostal tissues. Ibuprofen might be helpful, the soreness should pass once the cough passes.

Coughing actually can result in separated ribs, even a broken rib if bad enough. There isn't much that can be done if it is separated, except taking it easy. And it doesn't have anything to do with weight. My super-skinny sister has it happen fairly frequently.

Hard coughing can strain the intercostal muscles in your chest wall. It does hurt quite a bit. It will get better. Take some Advil to relax the muscles.
