I would assume that they are telling you that you are a "gem" or a "precious find" - a comparison to the rarity of the find since diamonds are precious gems which are relatively rare and of great value. In any case, I think it is most definitely a compliment rather than a reference to the physical qualities of the stones.

Depends on who is doing the telling and in what setting. It could be viewed as a compliment in a romantic setting or it could be viewed as an insult if it is said in anger.

Yeah...just like when someone calls you a star...what they are really telling you is that you're a big ball of gas...lol!!! So don't take it as a compliment.
