Neither can really be proven to be better, however, you should pick one way and stick to it. Most computer techies have found that if you turn off a computer until you need it, it functions just as well as if you leave it on most of the time.

The problem arises when a computer that gets rebooted every day gets left on for a week, or a computer that stays on constantly gets rebooted three times in one day.

It's kinda like people. If you're used to sleeping 8 hours, and then you get 6, your day sucks. If you're used to 6 and then get 8, your day still sucks.

Yes.

You will not harm the computer if you leave it run 24/7. I have a couple that have been running non-stop for two or three years now (acting as servers). But it will use more power and cost more to run them.

Shutting down and restarting will not hurt the PC. It causes no additional stress, wear or tear on your PC. In fact, the occasional reboot is healthy for the PC because it clears memory, etc. Plus it reducing the chances of virus attacks, being "zombied", etc in the middle of the night. They can't hack a PC that is turned off. My personal computer is only on when I am using it, and off the rest of the time.

So it is a matter of personal preference which you want to do. Neither is "better" for the PC itself.

I usually use the compromise called hibernation. It is a full power off but the system saves the entire memory to disk before shutting down. It comes back up much faster than from a normal power off. This way I save power and get the fast startup. If cost is no concern then it doesn't really matter though you should do a restart once in a while to clean up things.
