Huckleberry Finn. There are lots of things in there I didn't understand as a child that I saw as an adult. Twain was able to write adult things in there that were well hidden from children. Plus, it had Twain's usual sense of humor.

A couple of other things to read - The Diary of Adam & Eve. That was sweet and funny and might bring a tear to your eye at the end. Also read his literary criticism of James Fenimore Cooper. Sarcasm as its finest.

Ernest Hemingway once said, “All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn,” and I agree with him. I've read the book too many times to count.

I love The Diary of Adam and Eve -a lesser known Twain book Then if you want to read something really great, read his story about writing stories

I always liked Tom Sawyer. Where else can you find a story that has so much exceitement about the story and the antics of a kid.

Fiction: Huckleberry Finn, though the last coupla chapters fall apart badly

Non-fiction: Life on the Mississippi... funny & informative

everyone is going to say huck finn or tom sawyer, but for my money, "a connecticut yankee in king arthurs court" is awesome.
