I would say Kurt Vonnegut contributed much more to society than Anna Nicole Smith and thus deserves a bigger story.

He certainly does.
But take heart: 30 years from now nobody will remember Anna Nicole, but people will still be talking about Kurt Vonnegut.

sadly, though what you say is the honest truth, the truth is often not "sexy" enough for the news media.

let's face it - the news media is as dependent on ratings as any other television or radio program. and, the general public would much rather watch a sad "celebrity" scandal story than a televised broadcast of an obituary, even for such a great man.

Mr. Vonnegut's voice will be missed in this world. His contributions to the world of literature and the general conscience of the world at large will not be forgotten. Poor Anna Nicole Smith and her public train wreck of a life should be allowed to rest in peace. All the media attention in the world is not going to do any good for that poor little baby girl. shame on all of the parties involved (especially those that call themselves "responsible journalists") for allowing it to escalate to the point that it did.

The Anna Nicole Smith story is far more compelling than Kurt Vonnegot's passing at a ripe old age. Having worked hard for her money, Anna was careless and became victimized by an unscrupulous Howard Stern, who set out to rob her of her riches. In fact, he was almost successful in doing so, having killed Anna and her sole heir and then assumed fatherhood of the infant child. Only a revealing paternity test ultimately destroyed his plan. It is what great movies are made of, with far more drama and intrigue than any writer could imagine.

The amount of coverage is based on what broadcasters perceive will draw listeners or viewers. If you owned a t.v. station, if it was your dollars on the line, would you focus 4 hours of coverage on Kurt Vonnegut or Anna Nicole Smith?

Because every person in America knows who Anna Nicole was, while only the more intelligent people know about KVJ.
Kurt was also 84, a normal age to pass away, while Anna Nicole was much younger.

As one of the previous posters said, In 30 years people will still know about KVJ and no one will remmeber Anna Nicole.

Sad to see him go.....

Because we live in a "dumbed down" society. Let's face it, Kurt was an intelligent person who constantly questioned those in power, and Anna Nicole Smith was,...um..,what exaclty was she, anyway? I had the same reaction when Hunter S. Thompson died, and the only reason that got any attention was because Johnny Depp played him in a movie. Sad times are upon us.

i'm so ill of this Anna Nicole project. I mean come on, the headliners on T.V. are exhibiting the adult adult males who imagine that they are the daddy in courtroom speaking about her and Anna Nicole's toddler. in basic terms get over the death of Anna Nicole and flow on. it really is her fault she took drugs at the same time as pregnant, she's the guy who killed herself, no longer some different person.I also experience undesirable for the toddler. Having any such fuss for one toddler is ridiculous and stressful

Maybe it's because instead of being blessed with large fake breasts Kurt Vonnegut was blessed with a brilliant mind. And most of America doesn't find intelligence as entertaining as custody battles and drug overdoses. If it's any consolation I think his death is a big deal let's light a candle ok?

Thats an easy one...Beacause most people who watch mainstream broadcast news arent educated enough to know who Kurt Vonnegut is in the first place..ratings would nose dive.

You're right but we have to look at the sad facts.
Anna's life had taken over the news for months prior to her death.
She died while the whole baby's father disagreement was going on.
They have just determined the father.
We'll have a lot more to hear from Anna, I guess.
It's a terrible thing, to see that this is what they call big news nowadays.
