Once I turn it on it starts making a clicking sounds, I press F2 to go to the settings everything seems normal except that sometimes under hardware it will read unknown. The trouble started after I was trying to shut down and was trying to end a program or file I hadn't seen before... capp or something like that.... anyone?

I can't get into windows at all. It just opens a black screen that reads press F1 to reboot, or F2 for configuration (or something) if I press F1 it just repeats, doesn't reboot

stuff I need is backed up, in e-mail and stuff... there isn't anything life shattering on there.

So basically... there isn't a cheap way to recover?

When it boots, do you get past the BIOS and start loading Windows or does it just stop with a black screen and beep?

Check to see what it says about the connected Hard Drive (HDD) maybe connected as IDE0 or IDE1. If you don't see a HDD connected, the connector may be loose or even worse the drive has failed.

Hopefully it is the first and you can just open the computer and reconnect the cable. If the drive failed, you may have lost all your data.

If you are hearing clicking sounds or knocking sounds. The chances are, your Hard drive has sustained an impact or shock. Hard drives are very sensitive. When you hear this clicking, it's the sound of the heads smacking the inside of the drive. This happens when the drive either can not initialize due to a bad controller board that is built into the Hard drive, or the heads have fallen out of alignment.

The probability of recovering any data is pretty slim without going to a "Clean Room" where the drive can be disassembled and the platters transferred to another drive. But that's a costly procedure and unless there are end of the world files on the PC, I'd doubt you wanna throw down that kind of cash..

Hard drive. The PC is not seeing it consistently, so you get the clicking noise, and the "unknown" in the set up. Also why it can not start Windows. The F1/F2 message is the standard for a bad hard drive.

You do have a backup of your data, right....

The clicking noise is probably some hard ware piece getting ready to die. This is also why the bios will view it as 'Unknown'. If you are able to boot each time and get into windows, then you could run a virus scan and a spyware scan, but I'd have a tech check out your hard drive, floppy and CD Roms immediately before they die and you lose information.

If you can see F2 then you should be able to reboot in Safe Mode by continually tapping F8 while booting. If this works for you then in Safe Mode run your anti-spy and anti-virus programs.

If that is off base, and you have a laptop turn it off and take out the battery. Then reinsert battery and try booting.

Good luck.
