People cant deal with the emotions of others, it makes them feel uncomfortable, makes them feel like maybe they could have done something to prevent the other persons sadness and makes them feel guilty because there is nothing that they can really do to make it all ok again.. I think sadness in others triggers a sadness in ourselves or reminds us of when we were in a similar state of mind all you can do is just offer all the love and comfort you have after all a shoulder to cry on makes so much of the pain go away...

When people cry around me, I feel kind of awkward, because I don't know how to respond. On the one hand, I often want to comfort them, but on the other, I don't want to get too close.

People don't know what to say to sad people most of the time. I have that problem. I try to be a good friend to people, but situations where there is a lot of emotion involved usually weird me away.

They probably are torn by feelings of wanting to ask you what's wrong vs. thinking that you should have some privacy vs. being afraid that asking you why you are crying will make you cry harder.

I dont cry but I do fel awkward because I dont like when people are sad and they create stress.

They just don't know what to do. Then you feel like you should be consoling them when YOU were the one crying in the first damn place.

George is that you? lol I guess the main reason is because they don't know what to do or to say to comfort you. And maybe they think that you are going to suddenly flip out and go berserk. lol btw, you look nothing at all like a hippo.

Because a lot of people aren't entirely comfortable with emotion. It's something that to some seems very intimate, and it can't make them uncomfortable very easily.
