It was proven that goldfish have a 30 minutes memory. Some scientist(I don't remember his name) taught a goldfish to push a lever everytime it's hungry. The lever could only be pushed once a day, at a certain time for a 1 hour interval. After three days the fish learned exactly how the mechanism worked. Also many goldfish were taught by their owners to push a little ball through a hoop, and learn a swimming sinc-routine. So the idea that goldfish have a 2 second memory is not exactly acurate.

They have certainly better memory than just 2-sec! Else how can they possibly liver for more than 12 years? How can they reconginse you /people who bring them food by wiggering their tail like dogs?
But Goldfishes are really greedy and eat a lot (almost non-stop, unless you stop feeding...)

Suposidly a vet dispelled this myth as well as the TV Show myth busters by teaching goldfish to hit leavers for food and swim thru tubes.

If they do have a 2 or 5 second rule, then how is it that whenever it's feeding time each day, I walk up and tap the top of the aquarium... they all swim to the top for feeding? They must remember that it's that "tap" to show them the food is here???

Nope.. their memory is.... wait what were we talking about, I forget. LOL
Their memory is considerably better than 2 seconds and they have demonstrated the ability to learn based on remembering.

It's true they have an extremely small short term memory. People have different idea's of memory and often mistake long term learned behavior for memory and so think they don't.
