The most important reason to learn about outer space is to find places where humans can live independently of Earth.

Always, the life which succeeds is the life which spreads. Evolution has put into life of every kind, from viruses up to humans, an urge to colonize. Colonization is what makes a living species able to survive the destruction of any single habitat, including the destruction of its original birthplace. Life that does not spread can at best only hold on to what it has got, and usually it can't do that for long.

A species either colonizes and thrives... or it gets colonized and dies. If you are the colonizer, then your colonies are sources of wealth and indications of your vigor. If you are being colonized by some other race, then their colonies are an infection to your nation. What you call it depends on which side you're on. May be best races win.

In terms of Science and physics you can sort of go round in circles with this one.To understand what is going on at the sub atomic level you often have to look at the massive universal level to gain any insight.Often many theories about particle physics can be supported by looking at what is happening in space.for instance the existence of black holes was postulated well before any were discovered.Like wise it also works the other way.A current preoccupation is the apparent discovery that there is not as much anti matter as conventional matter in space which is leading to the search for possible other so called particles.
why do we need to know all this?Simply because that is the nature of science. The more you discover the more there suddenly becomes the next technological innovation. In science there is spin off all the time.If you like there are the things you know you are looking for and the things you don't know you are about to discover.Sure space is about exploring and trying to reach other worlds but it is also about understanding how things work here on earth.

we don't NEED to know about it, but by human nature we a re curious. From ancient times people have looked up at the stars and wondered what was out there, and what held it all together.

WE've moved on from there - we no longer think the world is flat, and we have much more sophisticated equiptment, but people still want to know what's out there. They want to know if something out there can help explain why we are here.

Also, research may uncover something useful to us on Earth. IT may help explain the laws of gravity, for example, and does indeed help us to discover and correct the laws of physics we have on earth.

THere is also the aspect of wanting to Understand everything, as humans do. We want to see what is out there, and what it's doing. We don't need to know about it, but there is an almost inbuilt compulsion to do it anyway. Plus it's an amazing and beautiful place.

I wouldn't say it ws a reason of why we need to know but it has always beens mans basic instinct to explore and understand his surroundings.

But a reason for us to need to know would be to prepare ourselves for what's out there and to understand and overcome some of the problems we would experience when the planet becomes so small we need to venture out to survive as a race.

It also prepares us for any major incidents that are heading our way like meteors and other dangers and can prepare our defenses of them. And by understanding what's out there we also gain an insight into our own planet and how we came about.

Because we are insatiably curious about the 'world' around us. Can you imagine if primitive man had asked the question, 'Why do we need to know what's outside this cave?' ???!!!
