they get all channels for free and you donthave to pay for them. it decodes the signal. has anyone had one that doesnt work

From your question, it would appear that you may have purchased an illegally 'chipped' cable box, which doesn't work?
If so, are you really surprised that something sold to you by a crook is not working...?

You better read the link below. It is illegal to descramble cable signals without permission of the cable company and there are fines of up to $5000.

no mine all work great..
if yours plays up, make sure aerial is good, and just do a new installation in the menu.....
