The industrial revolution brought more people into the cities, thus making the population more urban. It was, however, not for the better. There were no unions at the time, and folks worked in sweat shops 12 hours a day for pennies. Read Sinclair Lewis's book "The Jungle." Working conditions were dangerous, filthy, and demeaning. It wasn't until the unionization of workers did working conditions improved in the factories. Today, of course, those jobs are shipped out to third world countries, where folks work 12 hours a day for pennies.
