In the movie Titanic, during the beginning, did they use the real sunken ship or is it a fake? Or in the end when before the sunken ship turned into the way it was when Rose was on it to unite with Jack? I was watching the movie the other day and just can't seem to figure it out. Can someone help me?

I know that in the movie before the Titanic sank it was a fake. I'm not that dim-minded. But when the men went inside the Titanic to find the safe, were they really inside the titanic?

It's real footage from the Titanic shipwreck site. He spent a couple of days there filming. He went back again and filmed the documentary "Ghosts Of The Abyss" which was a genuine documentary on the Titanic.

Yes.
The footage at the beginning with the mobile camera swimming around the wreck is actual footage from the first ever Titanic dive. The pressure is too high down that deep so normal divers cannot access it.
I'm not sure about the footage where they show the same object then and now, but it was designed on fact from the original ship.

Director James Cameron used footage of the actual wreck of the Titanic in that movie. All the undersea footage of the ship was the Titanic as it lies at the bottom of the Atlantic.

at the very beginning when they show it underwater it is the real deal. James Cameron shot real footage of the titanic and there was even a special on the discovery channel showing him down there looking for titanic.

I'm not sure that's a good question. I think that for the outside they may have filmed the real ship, but for the inside when they get the safe they may have built it but not sure. Never thought about that. Or i may agree with Mac 150 they may have buit it on a set.

That little contraption they did the 'diving' in that went to the actual ship was an invention by James Cameron's brother. It was also used in the follow-up 'Ghosts of The Abyss'.

That is real footage of the ship. He gathered it for reference and later turned it into a second film "Ghosts of the Deep"
