The official answer is yes. But if you don't, and have a refund coming, you won't be penalized for filing late.

If you are sure that you dont owe any money to IRS nor State then you dont have to file any extension and can file your taxes at ease...You can e-file your taxes some where till Oct 31st...after which you can only file through paper. I had the same question and my tax consultant clarified it to me. Good Luck!

Yes. If you cannot file by April 17, you need to file an extension request.

I think you need to file an extension but I am not a tax expert, but I do hate the IRS as do all hard working americans with real jobs.

why would you just file if you dont owe anything and you will have it in ontime
