There's a big deal being made of this Imus guy calling a mostly black Rutger's women's basketball team "nappy headed hos", and since I not from the U.S.A., this expression is totally lost on me. Can someone please tell me exactly what this means and why is so offensive? Thanks...

I think you can tell what Imus said isn't that bad. Blacks say way worse about Whites and Koreans every day, but no one gives a damn. The worst thing about it all was calling them "hos", but there's really nothing to the word either.

One of the DJ in LA called jesse and sharpton media whores. That's exactly what they are - they go around looking for the slightest word from a white person, then whore up as much media time as possible.

The real nappy head hos are sharpton and his lapdog jesse.

Certainly it was a stupid, insulting comment. I don't think it's a racist comment, however. It wasn't a comment referring to the player's race but rather their collective hairstyles. Being "nappy-headed" is not the exclusive domain of blacks (although there are plenty who could be regarded as that); there are others who are not black who could be regarded as such as well. The "ho" comment, I don't really know why that was said, unless Imus just spit it out off the cuff. I do know that comments were also made of several of the women being heavily tattooed and appearing "rough-looking" but how that would make them "hos" I don't know. That being said, Sharpton, Jackson, et al are looking for another opportunity to further their agenda by demanding Imus' firing and putting another "whitey", "honky", or whatever in his/her place, all in the name of political correctness. Imus will continue his career in radio, whether he's fired for this or not.

Nappy headed refers to black people because black people usually have thick course hair. And a "ho" is a derogatory slur used towards women to call them promiscuous or "sluts". It was a racial slur that Imus used towards college basketball players. Most of these girls are freshmen in college. Some are only 18 and he used this comment towards them.

They did nothing to be called this but play a basketball game. That is the big deal here. It was uncalled for and inappropriate.

A ho is a woman who is too free with her favors. Because the Media in the US permits racial issues to be blown out of proportion Imus making a remark, not intended to offend but more than like to reflect his familiarization with slang. The ever willing team of Sharpton and Jackson jumped on the mistake like beggars at a buffet. What is forgotten is Jackson's insults to so many people as well as Sharpton's disrespect to whites. I fear this country is heading down the road of quick destruction. Important matters are ignored and the Media pushes junk like the Imus thing.

I can't tell you really-
Ho= whore ( but plenty of people say it and don't mean it ugly)
Nappy= totally lost on me.
Last time I checked that was an adjective describing anybody's knotty hair.
Now I hear that this adjective has been hi-jacked by some racist (named Al Sharpton) and refers only to black people's hair. That is really funny because I am 37 years old and have used that word plenty about my daughter's and my dog's hair. Conincidently neither my dog nor my daughter are black.

In essence we Americans have a constitutional right called "Freedom of Speech". However; there exists some limitation regarding our freedom.

Case in point; one doesn't run into a crowed theater and yell fire, causing harm to others in a steppe. Another point; one doesn't express social, or racial disparities at their place of employment; with out consequences, particularly when sponsored by advertising companies; whose dollars are generated by those being insulted.

In as much; why would anyone do business with any person(s), who insults them racially, sexually or in any form or fashion.

I am going to answer your question honestly in hopes that it will truly help some understand the situation from a black woman's perspective. First and foremost the word "hoes" is offensive to call a woman of any race. The raw definition of a hoe is a woman who is sleeps with men for money. That name is very offensive coming from any man to any woman.

Secondly "nappy" generally is used to refer to rough, curly textured hair. This is extremely offensive to black women because in the past various factors in this country have taught us that our hair is unacceptable. Hence the results, pressing combs, chemically straightened hair, hair-weaves, wigs etc.

So to sum it up, this is an extremely disrespectful statement coming from even a black man and to add insult to injury it can from someone of a different race who will never understand our pain.

Nappy refers to very curly hair, which is common among Blacks.
Hos is Black slang for whore or prostitute, used by Black men and rappers to denigrate women.
Picture your wife, sister or daughter the subject of the remarks, and I think you will understand. Blacks feel, with some justification, that he would not have made such a comment if the players had been white.
