how is that discrimination

Yes an employer can make speaking one language mandatory for all business communications. In that way there are no mistakes due to misunderstanding. It is not discrimination if everyone has to do it. It is much like requiring all employees to wear a uniform

Lunchroom and hallway conversations with friends can continue in any language for everything else.

Its not discrimination. Liberals think they can control people with a guilt trip by labeling them or their actions so as to make them feel badly about doing the right thing. Employers have a right to run their business as they see fit as long as they are not abusive. Requiring employees to speak English is a reasonable requirement the same as requiring a college degree in wigit making if the company makes wigits.

I've often wondered that myself...
I think if I had a work place I would insist everyone speak English, that is the language in which we do our business. When on break, that's you business though...

Absolutely. Simply have a large note on the application that speaking English fluently is a requirement of the job. You can even require them to take a test BEFORE you interview them as long as you pay for the test. If they don't take it, they don't even get to the interview.

I'm going to pull the obnoxious card here...nothing irritates me more than not being able to understand someone. If I go to a Mexican or Italian restaurant I need to understand them, if I go to Germany I need to know the language first, but if I go to Wal-Mart I should be able to ask where the damn Post-It notes and potting soil are and be understood-not have to act it out. That's just my non-tolerant Ohioan opinion, take it or leave it.
