And spoken to face-to-face..?
They're going through some personal problems, and I feel helpless.

Send them a written hug... and then call. Be verbose. Tell this person that you love them, they are on your mind... that you hurt for them. Then be quiet and listen. Ask leading questions if it seems appropriate, or allow them their privacy... you know their insides... you'll know what to do.

And remember... odds are your friend does not expect you to *fix* them... so being a friend... offering encouragement, support... or commiseration... letting them know you care... is all you really need to do.

By the way... attaching a song to an email sometimes communicates emotion well... when words (and short arms) cannot.

By sending an e-card, e-mail, a nice card, a phone call, prayers, thoughts. Just let them know all that you have is concentrated on them and how much you wish you could do more and be with them in person.

Give them a phone call. Let them know you care about them and wish you could be there to comfort them in person. The hugs will come through in your voice.

Just send them a nice letter or email or something and let them know you're thinking about them. That usually means more to a person than anything else you could do.

I know it is hard.
Try an e-card. I sent one recently to a friend and it was a cute virtual hug one on the Hallmark website :)

Everyone sends e-cards and emails these days - be different, send a handwritten letter and/or card - it is much more personal - who gets REAL mail these days, besides bills (and summonses - LOL!). Send him/her a card with a loving message and let them know you are thinking of them.

You could send them a letter, or a card or some sort of gift (flowers or something cuddly, like a teddy bear).
E-cards are an option of you want to get something to them immediately.

A phone call works for me, just to know that there is someone thinking of me helps a lot.

Call him/her on the phone. Send some flowers, or a balloon bouquet, something to brighten their day.
