Some clothing, especially shiny materials, are treated with teflon to make them stronger. You find this in rain jackets a lot.

It could also be residue from the packaging the shirts were shipped in. Cardboard boxes frequently smell like chemicals. It usually comes from the fresh printing on the exterior of the box. Sortof like a newspaper has a distinct odor because of the ink and the heat of the printing press.

Over the years I've had several blouses that reeked. Nothing would eliminate the stink when they were wet, being iron or worn on warm days. I tried various washing techniques with various items from soaps/detergents to vinegar, baking sodea, etc. Dry cleaning didn't help. I chalked it up to ....as said above...dye, perservative, finish.....and the blouses were sent off to Good Will. Fabric content didn't matter, the stinkers ranged from silk to inorganic fibers.......phew!

Probably from dye residue or preservatives. What do they smell like exactly?
