They were originally skater shoes, and still are, but are also worn by punks (to some extent) and emos.

Vans can be preppie or punk. Depends on the way they are being used...preppie for uptight folks and punk for soccer moms....

Vans run the gamut between preppie, punk, rave etc...
they are so versatile they go with any fashion group.
Plus, they are comfy and easy to put on and take off.

technically they are skater style or maybe even surfer style depending on where you are. Punk is more apt to be in converse and preppy would be more apt to wear k-swiss or keds.

vans were actually skater sneakers, i used to rock them all the time, but now with changing of times they are rooting out to different clicks and making them more versatile to other styles not just skaters...which sucks because they abandoned the meaning skaters

they're skater. not preppie or punk. punk is chuck taylors (all stars...) preppie is sperrys or birkenstocks.

Hmm.......I'd say a little bit of both. I wore Vans when I was, I think in 4th grade, and I thought I'd look good. LOL
