I have heard that if you see a place with a few trucks parked in around it, they serve good food because the truck drivers have learned where the good food is, but on every road trip I have been on, we stopped at a place like that and I found the food to be disapointing. I think what really happens is the trucks get off the interstate and stop at the first place that has a good space to park a big truck.

You're right, it's a myth. But sometimes it's the only place around. A good parking spot, maybe with a shower, is more important than good food.

very few truck stops and travel plazas have good restaurants anymore but if you see a free standing restaurant with no fuel pumps or anything that has trucks around it you might be on to something. Some of the truck stops have gotten so bad that I often look for fast food on the road because you know what you're getting. Its a shame some of these places can't even do bacon and eggs decently anymore.

I've always heard that the food is best at the truck stops. But they need showers and pretty waitresses, etc. etc. and I am shy about walking into a group of truckers. They can be sexy when they want to be.

No, it isn't. A 'few trucks' is not an indication. When there are trailer trucks all over the parking lot, and they call the wait staff by name; that means good food, good prices, good portions.

My dad's a retired trucker and as a kid I used to go with him a lot because my mother was a little on the crazy side and couldn't always deal with me.

Truck stop restaurants are cheap, they give you a lot of food, they're fast, and you can get a shower, fill up, eat, and sleep all at one spot.

I happen to lovvvve truck stops! So I would say myth. Maybe you're just not into that kind of food and need something more elegant.

it depends... sometimes they have good food, sometimes they have good lot lizards, and sometimes they have good/free overnight parking and the food won't kill you. Some places they stop because its free Internet service or cheap cable hook ups... smart truckers have a small refrigerator and some cans of back-up foods, and can prepare a meal for themselves in their trucks.

and sometimes the allure is a clean restroom and showers.

truckers have a lot of needs... they live in their trucks.

I'm pretty sure that you answered your own question correctly!

I ate chili at a truck stop once, when feeling quite suicidal. It was almost my undoing...

Yeah, they find a place to park their trucks for a spell...

You are right. When its time to get off, its the first place available. There are some exceptions of course for the well known places, but in general...
