What part of a map can be used to estimate the distance in miles from one city to another?

I know nothing about maps, and I'm sure this is a dumb question. Thank you so much for helping me though.

The scale tells you the number of miles (or kilometers) that each inch on the map represents. So, you can measure the distance on the map with a ruler, and then multiply the number of inches you measured by the scale, and this will be the approximate distance.
