is it just me or does anyone else think that if you have kept an animal so badly that the poor beast has to be put down that you should NEVER be allowed to keep any animals again? Is it just me? If it is, I don't know what to do next.

Porkchop - I totally agree with you - I think the 'just because it's an animal' point is well past its sell by date. In some respects, we should have the same attitude towards the good care of animals, whether we are veggies/vegans or not, purely on the basis that we should protect the 'dumb' animals, and I'm including the very young humans in this, because WE KNOW BETTER. I like your thinking.

I agree with you 100%. Until the laws for animal abuse become stricter, not just a slap on the hand, animal abuse will continue to go on, sadly. There are just too many heartless, sadistic A**holes out there who are literally getting away with murder. Just because it's an animal, shouldn't lessen the severity of the punishment. I hope when people see animal abuse, they will contact the proper authorities, and not be such chicken shits and not want to get involved.
I have seen several abusers in action, and did not hesitate to turn them in. I love my animals and cannot imagine anyone ever abusing them, and I will do anything to protect a defenseless animal from human cruelty. I wish more people out there would. GET SOME BACKBONE !!!

Some people are just plain sick, simply because animals cannot talk doesn't mean they don't suffer or feel pain. that person with the ban should be made to work under supervision in animal shelter a couple of days a week as part of the ban for the 15 yrs.
So maybe they can come to understand what they do and how wrong it is...I hate people like that, they lack any means of spirituality or feeling for anything... A ban for life would have been more appropriate...

Well is it a large breed? Are there any other symptoms? My dog has Degenerative Meylopthy although with a better diet and some extra supplements it has been progressing slowly but he would fall when playing not that serious though. That only lasted a short time for him now he just has weakness when he tries to jump and crosses his legs a little when he walks. It could also be severe arthritis, hip displesia, seizes, and any number of joint related problems add Hey people he said it is his friends dog I don't know about where you live but we don't make comon practice here of taking someone elses dog to the vet with out thier permission. By the way to the asker your friend should take her to the vet and if he doesn't know that you should suggest it. .

I agree with you about the lifetime ban but the problem is as with any ban - enforceability. I know nothing about these bans but do not see how they can be enforced.

I have rescued animals from the cats protection and labrador rescue and have bought animals to the best of my knowledge no one has ever checked to see whether I have been convicted of animal abuse (I haven;t by the way!!) so I do wonder what the point is.

I would like to see some punishment that had an element of education about it to try to prevent the suffering from ever happening again, to my mind that would have more point

It isn't just you. People who mistreat animals (especially in a way severe enough to warrant a 15 year ownership ban) should never be given the oppurtunity to do it again!

Granted, some will argue that people can and do change, but to that I argue, would you give a child to someone who was convicted of sexual abuse on a child 15 yrs previously?

I think not.

You're right.. Anyone who abuses animals should never be allowed to own another animal, shouldn't even be allowed to be around animals, and shouldn't even be allowed to go to the zoo! 15 years is actually a pretty decent sentence, usually the courts say 2 or 3 years only.

As I do agree that is still good that they are not to have animals for 15 years. At least someone did something. In many cases nothing is done. Now the trick is going to be finding someone to inforce his sentence.

Here is the best news of the day. Now as long as President idiot doesn't veto it we will be making progress.

Maybe they're going to die in about 15 years...jkjk...but still, yes. I think that someone who's mistreated an animal that badly should not be allowed a pet...at least not until they've gone through intense amounts of therapy.

That person should never be allowed to have a animal nor a child. I would love to be able to treat that person the way they treated the poor dog!!!!

Who's gonna check anyway,i wouldn't of thought the rspca or whatever would be wasting rescources doing weekly checks. They should be made to live the way the animal was kept.
