Perhaps the greatest factor was the Civil War which forced both North and South to advance technologically or else lose the war. The North did a better job and therefore they won. This was the foundation for the industrial growth of the later 1800s.

The civil war started the rapid expansion the Union states had a lot of the resources Coal etc the mass production of arms resulted.Massive influx of immigrants with an ingrained work ethic particularly eastern europeans and Jewish Communities. Also dont forget the discovery of oil in Texas late 1800s

Civil war was a major one. I know here in Cleveland Ohio in 1860 we had one foundry, by 1865 we had hundreds, from making materials for the war. Those business did not fold up and go away but kept producing after the way.
I am sure many areas have similer stories

My grandma was born in the early 1900's RIP: jst passed. and she always take about wanting things as a whole. the WANT. { key word } for a better life, for her childern.
