Sounds like a lead is loose. Check all your speaker connections.
If this dont work, press start, control panel, performance and maintainance,system,hardware,d... manager, then sound device. Check there is no yellow circle with a ! mark next to anything. If there is, right click and update or install drivers.
After a reboot your speakers should be fine.

Things to try are to check the obvious things. Wires / power / volume level.

Then download the latest driver updates and install. If there is a failure with the hardware, it should fail because the install program won't be able to find the hardware.

Go into the windows control panel, in 98 look up System then device manager, in XP look up hardware.

If there are any exclamation marks, there's a problem that Windows can probably help you with.

Failing that, I think sending / taking it back and replacing it is probably the way to go if you've only had it a month.

Well, firstly, I know that computers have sound cards, and sometimes, they disconnect. Mine did once, so I put it back in place. Try seeing if yours is in place. =)
Secondly, go on the start menu, control panel, sounds speech and audio devices, and then sounds and audio devices. I think you know the rest, lol ;)
If THAT doesn't work, then I'd suggest you ask your local pc store, and find out why your sound isn't working on the computer.
You know, now that I think about it, it could be just the speakers. Maybe they don't work anymore? I don't know really, I just thought of that while I was typing lol. Anyway, hope I helped! =)

You might have muted it by mistake, try unmuting it. You can double click the little speaker icon near your clock and there is a checkbox to mute there.
