North Carolina is apologizing for slavery. Why? I think an apology is nothing, and what is it going to do. They should have apologized way long ago. What will an apology do, thats right NOTHING!

I don't see why NC needs to apologize.

Cheers!

The apology has been a long time coming but it is a step in the right direction.
There is no recompense for the atrocities that African-Americans had to endure but now the dialog will be open that the State Of North Carolina fully particiapated in slavery .
North Carolina,Virginia, Maryland and other states will have to deal with the impact that slavery has had on our society .
Politicians wanted this swept under the rug and forgotten about or put the blame on their ancestors as a way of not dealing with it anymore.

Meka, I see your point, but I respectfully disagree. An apology in and of itself will not cause any immediate practical changes. However, it's the principle that counts. It means that the state "officially" is adopting a new moral and ethical standard by formally acknowledging that subjugation of different races, ethnic groups and cultures is inherently wrong and should have never happened.

Will it do anything for you and me? No. But, for our children and their children-our nation's future leaders-being taught in school that even governments have the will and responsibility to own up to their past actions may make them leaders who are less likely to be ruthless and injust when it's their turn to make decisions that affect the lives of other nations' peoples.

To illustrate my point: Look at racial segregation. It wasn't until the people of the country and states acknowledged that it was wrong that the laws were changed to desegregate public establishments. Generally, people's attitudes followed those public and legal acknowledgements.

There are probably better examples, but this is the first one to come to mind.

I think all slave owners should apologize. I'm gonna hold my breath until they do!

Seriously, I think official apologies by the state for wrongs done long ago are useless at best but can open the door for problems.

Slavery is history, not current events. We as AMERICANS ALL are shaped by our common history and should use it to help unite us. Apologies divide us.

Race pimps like jackson and sharpton are extorting apologies from Southern states; what about the Northern states?

But it's too late. an apology is not gonna do a dang thing. Apologies will not slow the school drop out rate, nor the alarming rate of teen births, or the number of young men that turn to drugs and crime.

So what's the point?

Get over it already. Other races and ethnicities have faced discrimination and you don't see them crying about what went on over 100 years ago. Seriously, you have your opportunities now, use them to make a better future for yourself instead of being stuck in the past.

I'm white and I have nothing to appologize for. My family just got here in the 1950's. My father's family was only here since the 1920's. No one in my family history owned anything really. Most black family lines have been on this land longer than most whites.

Perhaps, but the good news is that you can almost immediately apologize for using "to" instead of "too" in your question.

the truth will set you free. reconcilliation is important, as an idea. Coming to terms with the past will help mould the future, resigning it to antiquity never helped anyone or anything. It is a good step, the worst it can do is nothing???

I wish my government would apologise for wrongs done in their name, if not by them as people.

All the slaves are gone. Who are they apologizing to? What about the American Indians?
