It's actually spelled REFRIGERATOR.
I was always told that they're called a "FRIDGE", because when refrigerators first became available to consumers in mass #'s, the main manufacturer was Frigidaire, hence "fridge"
This always seemed plausable to me as 90% of all antique refrigerators I've seen have been Frigidaires, & most all of them were running perfect, they were very well made..

Actually it is because the brand Fridgidare was one of the most popular brands when these things came out. In fact the name became synonimous with refigerators. Many people called thiers the fridgidare even if it was a different brand. That name stuck and since we are a lazy lot got shorted to fridge.

because the company Frigidaire was one of the first companies to start mass producing refrigerators. Frigidaire was synonymous with refrigerator for years and still is even though there are a lot of refrigerator companies now.
So in short, Fridge is short for Frigidaire

1) Easier than the full name. 2) Fridge emulates the word frigid for cold. I have also heard them referred to as the reefer as they are sometimes called that in restaurants and aboard ships.

because it is actually contained in the word and it is more descriptive - fridge makes you think frigid...makes you think of cold...which is what you use the 'fridge for...keeping things cold.

Or "rater." We could call it a "rater" for short..."Hey, get me a beer from the rater." Catchy.
