Liberia gained its independence from USA in 1847. It's quite a delicate issue, as it has been "colonised" by black Americans with US help who repressed the native tribes. The settlers never integrated back into African society as first expected and started referring o themselves as Americans. Anyhow, the situation still isn't stable and ther are tensions between "Americans" and natives as well as among different native groups and political fractions.
Ethiopia wasn't really colonised, though it was invaded by Italians.
Never colonised by Western countries: China with Taiwan, Japan, Thailand, Saudi Arabia (although Najd and Hijaz used to be under Turkish rule), Turkey, Iran, both Koreas, Mongolia, Afghanistan.
Afghanistan also was never really colonised, although it was invaded by British, Soviets and now Americans.
Nepal was never formally colonised, but the British installed their resident there during the colonial era.
Sikkim was also never formally colonised by the British, but they installed a puppet king and actually ran all tha affaris of the small country until 1947, when it was independent until it joined India in 1975.
Mongolia has also never been colonised by a Western force but it had been colonised by China (until 1911), although a Russian Baron Ungern shortly ruled the country with the blessing of Mongolian Buddhist religious authorities.
Bhutan signd a treaty in 1910 that let Britain run all its foreign affairs. It gained complete souvereignity in 1947.
Being colonised by Europeans was actually better than being colonised by non-Europeans: most countries colonised by non-Europeans have still not become independent.
Lands colonised by non-European countries: Tibet (China), East Turkestan - Xinjiang (China), Pattani kingdom (Thailand), Korea was colonised by Japan, not by any Western country and divided into South and North at the beginning of the Cold War.

That's a very good question and there are probably very few that avoided European imperialism ... perhaps only a few that are isolated. Thailand seems to be one that was never a colony nor part of the imperialistic movements of Europe. What of Japan? Kurdistan? Turkey? Mongolia? Tibet? Nepal? Kazakstan?

Japan and China were not colonized by Western countries though it was a close call for China. Thailand, Ethiopia and Liberia can be added to the list.

Thailand, Ethiopia (except for 5 years), Nepal, Afghanistan ... Can't say it's done 'em much good!
Not being colonised wasn't necessarily good for them.
Not having colonies wasn't necessarily bad for others: look at Switzerland and Sweden.
As you point out, the USA started off as a group of colonies. So it's hardly an automatic death sentence.

Eithioia was the only African country that avoided being a colony of a European nation. It was invaded by the Italian in the WW2 but the Abyssinians kicked them out.
