Nobody can be 100% sure about the answer to your question, but there are 2 types of evidence pointing to the ancestry of the Pashtun / Pathan people: [1] ancient documents; [2] anthropological studies.

[1] Some Greek and Roman writers mention a people called the 'Pactyan' living on the eastern frontier of Iran as early as the first millennium CE. Also, the Rig-Veda mentions a tribe called the 'Pakhat' as inhabiting present-day Afghanistan.

[2] Most anthropologists say that the Pashtuns are of Aryan descent and that their ancestry is very similar to the Persians, Kurds, Tajiks and Baluchis. But the ancient Pathans / Pashtuns obviously mingled and intermarried with other people, including Mongols and Turks. The Pashtuns are mainly a Caucasoid people with Mediterranean features, but blonde hair and blue or green eyes are not uncommon, especially amongst remote mountain tribes.

Pashtuns have survived a turbulent history over several centuries, during which they have rarely been politically united. Pashtun martial prowess has been renowned since Alexander the Great's invasion in the 4th century BC.[14] Their modern past began with the rise of the Durrani Empire in 1747. The Pashtuns were also one of the few groups that managed to impede British imperialism during the 19th century.[15] Pashtuns played a pivotal role in the Soviet war in Afghanistan (1979–89), as many joined the Mujahideen. The Pashtuns gained world-wide attention with the rise and fall of the Taliban, since they were the main ethnic contingent in the movement. Modern Pashtuns have been prominent in the rebuilding of Afghanistan, where they are the largest ethnic group, and are an important community in Pakistan, where they are the second-largest ethnic group.
