The Sun is classified as a star, and it is an average of 93 million miles (150 million km) from Earth.

To be specific, the Sun is of spectral class G2V. This makes it a main sequence star. It burns white, but appears yellow from Earth due to the scattering of light. It is sometimes called a "yellow dwarf" star. In 4 or 5 billion years, it will become a red giant and then a white dwarf.

The distance between the Earth and Sun varies because the Earth's orbit is elliptical, not circular. The Earth gets as close as 91.4 million miles (147 million km) and as far as 94.5 million miles (152 million km).

Normally accurate braxton_paul made a glaring error. The sun is not a white dwarf. A white dwarf is a very special kind of star where nuclear reactions no longer take place. The Sun is a G type main sequence star, sometimes called a yellow dwarf although as anyone can see it is really white, albeit a warm white, not a cold blue-white. It is 93 million miles away as others have said.

Well, ..., you may find this surprising but the closest "earth-like" planet is actually a moon: Titan. It is closest to Earth in that it contains geologic structures almost exactly like those on earth. It contains a dense atmosphere and lakes, rivers, seas. Additionally, it contains cloud structures, as well as, wind and precipitation. So there you have it, Similar Geology, Meteorology, and morphology. Yes it's much colder than we are but it is closest to Earth in the kinds of processes that occur on this moon. BTW, if titan were not gravitationally bound to Saturn we would most likely consider it a planet as it is the 10th largest object in the solar system and larger than Mercury and Pluto.
