the police, DVDs, and leaflets say so but im not sure is it a real crime or is it just to stop people copying them?

Yes, piracy is a real crime punishable by prison and or fine.
The thing is most people never get busted because they are not vocal about what they do.

The small time pirate is much less likely to get cought then a person who downloads thousands of movies, songs. software, etc.

Even showing a movie to a class in school could be concidered piracy unless the school/teach has permission to do so.

Stealing any form of media is always a risky action.

It's a crime. The people, who produced the items, are not being paid for whatever you steal.

ah yeah its a crime. don't you read the beginning of the dvds with the fbi warnings.
