We shall soon see every talk show under siege by the PC police, and TV news as well. Nothing offensive will escape the lawter's and victim's interest groups. If they can't censor and stifle opposing views by legislation (darn that first amendment!) they will find a way to sue and otherwise harrass the people that annoy them off the air. Big Brother is watching and soon will be taking care of all of us.

He's not getting punished for freedom of speech. If you believe that, then you don't understand how great this right is. Google "china, tanks, protest" and you'll see what some countries think about the freedom of speech.

Imus is getting fired for being a stupid employee. The people protesting the soldiers' funerals aren't employed by anyone there who can fire them for exercising their freedom of speech.

The 1st amendment is about government intervention or punishment. It's not there to make employers keep an employee who drives away money (sponsors).

Right! Where is all the outrage over border guards in jail for doing their job, funerals of troops being disrespected, whites rushed to court without facts, gangs, and drugs, black leaders with double standards. How many of those who are criticizing have done as much for blacks with sickle cell or cancer as Imus. Yes he is a jerk, but this is one sided. He should be made to clean up his act and think before he speaks.

The problem here is not a matter of who said what, but where they said it. Those people who protest at soldiers' funerals, as horrible as they may be (they are disgusting), are doing it on their own time and in a public space. Imus is being paid to talk, and he is doing it on private company time, and what he says reflects on the company that pays him. Thus, when he says something boneheaded like he did, in the mainstream media where everyone could hear, he is going to get punished for it. It has nothing to do with free speech. It has to do with his representation of the media company that is paying him. He made them look bad, and they took appropriate action. These are two completely different cans of worms.

People that protest out soldiers funerals are sick, narrow-minded a**holes! They would not have any ability to speak if not for out soldiers!

Mr. Taco's answer is excellent and I can do no better than that. Read his answer again, in case it wasn't clear to you the first time. Props to Mr. Taco!
