It has nothing to do with the Mississippi River, which is 300 miles east of us, and everything to do with the fact that Galveston Bay is very shallow. The Texas coastline has a series of barrier islands running all the way down to Mexico. This is due to our location on the western side of the Gulf of Mexico. Since the bay and Gulf are very shallow here, we get a lot of churning from the tides. In addition, the composition of our "sand" (very fine) keeps us in cloudy waters.
You'd probably find better beaches around South Padre (closer to Brownsville than Corpus). Then again, going offshore can help, too. I've visited a few drilling rigs (and one semi) in the gulf, and the water there is pretty clear.

The Trinity and San Jacinto Rivers empty into Galveston Bay. The water is muddy and polluted, contrary to what is said! The cities of Fort Worth, Dallas and countless others dump their treated waste into the Trinity River. While clean most of the time, other times it gets dumped without treatment.......during floods and when the treatment centers just shut down. There are no fish in the Trinity except for stocked fish that die very quickly and it has signs posted all along it's length about not eating the fish? And can you imagine what Houston must dump into it? The Houston Ship Channel is the Trinity River. Galveston Bay was a pretty sight when I was young, 50 years ago the water looked different! Galveston Beaches looked different also, no foot deep seaweed washing up. Anyway, I miss when the world was cleaner.

Maybe if the army corp of engineers would stop building shoreline hardening stuctures along the coast, the energy from the waves wouldn't cause the sand to be transported up into the water column and into the channel. The sand is then replenished on galveston beaches by a permanent dredging barge to complete the circle of stupid coastal management decisions.

corpus christi and south padre island have very nice beaches. corpus is 3 hours drive south of houston. the beaches then get pretty shitty around tampico and veracruz (mexico) before clearing up again when you start to circle east at the yucatan peninsula. the yucatan/belize beaches are outstanding, only a cheap 2-hour flight from houston.
galveston is mucky because it's so shallow - if you were to walk 5 miles from shore, you would never be more than 10 or 12 feet deep.

Galveston Bay is very shallow, only around 9 feet deep, so once you get out of the bay and into the deep ocean, around 30 miles, the water won't be so muddy.
I don't know whose webpage this is, but it's got some pretty good pictures of one of the beaches at Corpus Christi.

It's a few miles. I chartered a boat and scuba dived off the coast. We planned on Buckaneer Rigs but didn't make it that far. We decided, due to high waves to just anchor next to an old rig, which was several miles out. I went down and saw nothing but angel fish and clear water. I had my spear gun ready to grab one, and all of a sudden the water went mercy and I couldn't see a thing. I surfaced and was about 150 yards from the boat. Never got any fish, but saw a couple hammerhead sharks. Feed-Me is right though, due to the shelf. It's almost 30 miles to drop off where it is always clear. I was only about 60 feet, but out there drops off much deeper.

Cayman Islands are nice and clear water. Seriously, Corpus Christi has some absolutely beautiful beaches, lots of white sand and clear water. It's a couple of hours down the coast.
