There will always be free speech. Imus chose an unopportune time to give it, during his working hours. You can have ALL the free speech you want, but when it affects the pockets of Companies? Your free speech no longer becomes a "free speech," it becomes a LIABILITY.

Free speech is alive and well. But when you personnally insult a group over the radio/tv or whatever just because you are a famous personallity and take advantage of that. You are wrong. So what was his reasoning behind saying that in the first place anyway? What prompted him to say that and think he would not feel any reprocutions? I mean come on what was he thinking? That wasn't free speech that was just stupid.

Just because someone has the right to say whatever they want doesn't mean they should. Don Imus is not being arrested for what he said, so of course he has the right to say whatever he wants. His employers, however, also have the right to fire him for saying something that they don't agree with. He's a public figure and should be held accountable for saying something so crass and rude. So he can say what he wants, but other people have the right to not put up with it, and say what they want back.

no bud, I don't think calling an entire womens basketball team "Nappy headed hos" are part of the free speech package especially when you have multibillion dollars companies sponsoring your show, you have less than 400,000 listeners, you have guys like Jesse Jackson and big Al Sharpton waiting for an opportunity to be on camera (again!!!). I strongly believe that Imus wants out of his contract and he is a smart enough to know how to get fired.

He does have free speech...he is not in jail and there are no plans to jail him. Free speech doesn't mean consequence free speech. You still gotta pay the piper for the words that come out of your mouth.

this cultural ethnic sensitivity has gone way overboard.
americans love to tout free speech, but in reality most americans are very intolerant of free speech that does not agree to their own views. as long as one agrees then the speech is ok.
not to say that there isn't racism still in u.s. but it seems to be all one way. imus said something about black stereotypes and got all kinds of heat, if he had said about a mostly white girl team, "boy those are some greasy haired country hos", i bet that there wouldn't have been a tenth of the hooplah there is now.
where was sharpton and jackson when tim hardaway went off on gays in sports, nobody raised a huge stink on his "unenlightened " views.

we all need to remember free speech is easy to support as long as the speech is something that we agree with, but we need to support it especially when we disagree with the speech

When did the government try to stifle him? They didn't. Freedom of speech is still in effect.

If your reaching an audience depends on advertisers, they are not "free" either. He can continue to say what he wishes, just not with others paying for it.

He's not being charged with any crime. There is still free speech. However, his employer can chose to end the employment status with him at any time if he choses to insult half of the American public.
