In the case of the Duke Lacrosse team: I was horrified when I first heard of a brutal gang rape at a party. I felt bad for the women involved and now feel sick at finding out they were lying. When a woman falsely accuses a man of men of rape, it makes it harder for other woman who have been raped to be taken seriously. Not to mention it would ruin the lives of the accused. Where do these guys go from here? They have been cleared of the charge but what about those other men sitting in jail because they didn't have the resources to clear themselves? Ladies: You can't get back at men by calling them rapist. There are woman out there who need help and we don't need woman who falsely accuse men of rape out there. What are your thoughts?

Had these guys needed to rely on a public defender, they'd probably being doing 10-20 right now.

Even with no witnesses, no DNA, a drunken accuser with multiple versions of the story.

If these guys were charged, any innocent man can be charged, convicted, and have his life ruined by a drunken, promiscuous, part-time college student, moon-lighting as a stripper.

EDIT:

How can anyone say for sure that false allegations are extremely rare?

Some people think that these guys are guilty, despite all of the evidence to the contrary.

When a person can be arrested, charged, and prosecuted with no evidence other than the accusers several conflicting stories, it is clearly possible for many innocent men to be convicted.

As a man who was falsely accused of rape I can tell you being accused of it is pretty much a mental rape. She will get a slap on the wrist at most for what she did while I have to get on with life. I generally don't hate anyone, but I only wish the worst for her and I seriously hope someday someone puts her in her place.

Reliable scientific estimates of false accusations as a percent of all accusations range between 40 and 60 percent... hardly what any reasonable person would call "extremely rare."

Thankfully, those admirable young men were completely vindicated in the media as well as in a court of law. Now THAT is an extremely rare occurrence!!!

I agree with you. Many women will have a hard time being believed now. That woman (Crystal something, according to Fox News) hasn't done a damn thing for us.

wrack..., please do not confuse the percent of unresolved cases and lack of proofs with false accusigns. Actually, there is such a small percent of falsely accused rapes, that it should not affect the rest of true accuses. This is our legal system, still relying on patriarchal values that are actually trying to deny the very fact of rape. Look at their definitions and understanding of rapes. It looks like any rape never happened in human history and that in almost every case woman was the one who provoked. Or that if a victim was not in a positions to defend herself, they interpret it as she actually accepted the act voluntary. That is why most authorities a-priori try not to take seriously the accusigns. Believe me, there are much more women who are still silent about their rapes, to avoid the humiliations in courts and public places, than those who are ready to falsely accuse rape.

This is just my uneducated opinion BUT... from what they say this women believes she was raped. I think she may have been drinking or doing other things and be confused. It is a crime what the DA did to these boys. This hurts women for 2 reasons. Now they may not be taken seriously , and now the women will be even more afraid to come forward.

Of course they make it harder, just like gold diggers make it harder for good women who want a family. The next girl who gets raped and reports it in your country will have that story looming over her head everytime the authorities look at her.

False accusations of rape are pretty rare though the do happen. Something must have been very wrong with the women from that party to make them do that. No sane person would want to go through an arduous court battle unless they absolutely have to.

Okay, I'm enraged - 90% of rape cases are false accusations? Julius, you are seriously deluded. Either you're horribly misinformed or you're a psychotic misogynist.

That being said, false rape accusations are extremely rare, but the are totally detrimental to the feminist cause. The false accusations are thrown into the faces of rape survivors and the character of the victim is called into question in court. It's disgusting! I wish it didn't happen ... because of it the system punishes victims for reporting crimes!

And idiots on Y!A get to spew out instances as rationalization for their sexist dogma...

It's my understanding that 90% of all rape charges come about after the fact when the woman changes her mind, which generally occurs about the same time her husband comes home on his lunch break and catches her red handed.
